Golf Course Review: Meadow Creek Golf Club

Meadow Creek Golf Club in Dracut was the first round in the golf double-header we played a little over a month ago.  It was put on the back burner after we were invited to play the two courses in Maine that made it into the last couple issues.

We played this round on a last minute decision on a Friday afternoon.  The real reason for the visit was to see how the construction of the clubhouse was moving along.  See, the guys that I was playing with had put in an unsuccessful bid to build the clubhouse over the previous winter.  Turns out, their bid came in a little too low for the owners comfort.  Crazy but true.  Now, we’re in the 4th quarter of the golf season and the building still isn’t done.  The history that Meadow Creek has is littered with financial difficulties; what better way to cap that off than to go with the higher bids for construction and have it drag on through the heart of the New England golf season.

Aside from that, there is actually a well constructed, well maintained challenging golf course to be played.  The front 9 is a little more forgiving than the back.  If you haven’t worked out the rust by the turn, you will struggle with the tightness of the remaining fairways; you’d really be better off leaving your driver in the trunk for the whole round.

If you’ve ever played Red Tail out in Devens, which is the course that I use to measure all others against, you’ll find that Meadow Creek has a similar feel.  There are some real nice visual holes to play which makes a round that much more enjoyable.  It’s not nearly on the same level as Red Tail but there’s a handful that I’m sure you’d want to play again.

Now, I don’t know much about designing a golf course, but I firmly believe that no matter how talented you are, if you don’t have the terrain your talent is useless.  And on the flip side of that, if I had the perfect patch of land and enough space to do what I wanted, I could construct a course that would make my own must play list.  What I’m getting at here is, Meadow Creek does a lot boasting on their website.  Our course is this, our clubhouse is going to be that, blah, blah,….     The course is nice but it has nothing to do with ownership.  What is most evident if you do decide to visit is how bad they are at customer service.  We ran into attitude when we paid our greens fees, the starter gave us shit about the tires of the cart not being completely on the cart path.  Mind you it was pushing 90 the day we were there and I was trying to get into the shade.  The beer cart was out of Budlight (at noon, on a Friday) and they don’t make any food available.  How difficult is it to throw a few dogs in a steamer?  (At the turn we were told that a local sub shop drops off subs daily and the girl drives around with them on her cart.  That didn’t happen while we were there.)

It’s too bad we ran into the people we did because I really enjoyed the course.  And maybe when the clubhouse is finished the atmosphere around there will be a little more upbeat; it’s suppose to be completed for the Labor Day weekend.  If you love golf, give Meadow Creek a shot.  If you want anything more than that, think twice before you head to Dracut.
